4 types of online gambling expected to be legal soon in Michigan

11th December, 18:14

Four types of gambling will be newly legal in Michigan if Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, as expected, signs a package of bills that was being sent to her Wednesday by the Legislature.

The Senate began approving the bills by overwhelming, bipartisan votes early Wednesday afternoon. The House has already passed the bills, but would have to concur with changes made by the Senate before the bills could be sent on to the governor. Those House votes are also expected to take place Wednesday, before the Legislature breaks for Christmas.

The expanded gaming would become legal when and if Whitmer signs the bills, which she has signaled she is likely to do after a thorough review. How soon Internet gaming and sports betting would actually begin in Michigan would depend on a number of factors, including how long it takes to produce rules related to the legislation, how long licensing takes, and how soon licensed operators have technology in place, officials said.

"My hope is that by March Madness, it will be live," said Sen. Curtis Hertel, D-East Lansing, referencing the NCAA basketball tournament.

The following types of gambling would be newly legal:

Would provide for the licensing of "third-party facilitators" who could take bets on horse races electronically, in addition to the bets that can be placed on live or simulcast races at the track, under existing law.
