Odds Favor Tiger Woods And Peyton Manning Victory In Champions For Charity Match
21st May, 02:31I provide insight on U.S. sports-betting & information you can bet on.
A hookup between four sports superstars and the greatest of all time (GOAT's) in their respective sports join forces to offer fans entertainment on the golf course this weekend. Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning (-200) are partners and favorites over Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady in The Match: Champions For Charity sponsored by Capital One.
The star-studded match plus other challenges during the event will raise more than $10 million towards COVID-19 relief efforts. The match also includes a partnership with the "All In Challenge," an initiative that provides food for those in need.
The broadcast is going to include more betting references and prop bets sure to be discussed with PGA golfer Justin Thomas providing on-course coverage along with CBS' Amanda Balionis. The host is Brian Anderson, who is joined by 2008 Masters Champion Trevor Immelman and TNT's Charles Barkley as commentators. The spectator-free event will include Barkley playing one hole with $200,000 for COVID-19 relief efforts on the line.
There will be betting on teams, players and props, but this 'Champions for Charity' event is different than last weekend's skins match. The Champions For Charity match-play competition has two formats that the sponsors hope will provide an entertaining mix of strategy, team collaboration, and consequence on every hole.
The front nine will be a best-ball format, in which every player will hit a shot and the low score of the players determine the score for the team. On the back nine, they will play a modified alternate shot format in which every player hits a shot off the tee, one-shot is picked and then the players will alternate shots of the drive that they pick.
Golfstats.com provides weekly PGA Tour course and event information, stats and player performance charts. For this week, we have two NFL quarterbacks playing as celebrities and amateur golfers. Manning has the slightly lower handicap near 6 while Brady has a handicap of 8. Yet Brady is the favorite (-155) on hole No. 1 to hit the longest drive over Manning (+115).
The course was brutally difficult when it opened 25 years ago as designers Greg Norman and Pete Dye tunneled 18 holes through the preserve and swampland. Tight fairway's were common, and missing them meant players had to contend with sand, water, brush, and scrub brush. Then try to hit into greens surrounded by traps and pot bunkers. The course was redesigned and softened in 2015, much to the anger and disappointment of Norman.
Beyond the advantages of stronger golf by Woods and Manning versus Mickelson and Brady, there is likely more motivation and focus by golfs greatest all-time player Woods and one of footballs greatest QB's Manning, who has played in the shadow of Brady's six Super Bowl wins. A focused favorite with mental strength and skill is a very tough opponent, especially with Woods playing this match on his home course as a member. Woods is likely to play better and hit more precise shots on this course against a fading Mickelson, who is now almost 50 years old.
Phil upset Tiger in extra holes sudden death of a $10 million winner-take-all match-play showdown in Las Vegas nearly 18 months ago. Wood should be better on the best ball front nine in this rematch. The back nine is alternate shot in the Champions For Charity event, but Woods and Manning may well be hooking up for more birdies and scores in a potential beatdown of their rivals.
Expect higher TV ratings and more trash talking in this event than last week's skins game. The front nine will be a more direct battle between Woods and Mickelson with the best ball format. The fairway's are tighter and Woods will have an advantage off the tee. Tiger also knows this course so much better than Phil, and Woods' knowledge on and around the greens should pay off as well.
Other selected prop bets offered at leading Las Vegas Bookmakers William Hill and Westgate Superbook:
Westgate golf oddsmaker Jeff Sherman discussed how the SuperBook made props for the Champions For Charity event on the Vegas Stats & Information Network live stream (and SiriusXM Channel 204).
Hole No. 5 will be very interesting. Yahoo sports first announced this week that all four players will play the Par 4 with just one club. It will be fun to see which club each player chooses to play, and if there will be additional prop bets added.
FanDuel Sportsbook has a closest to the pin prop on hole No. 4, a Par 3 of just over 200 yards. I'd bet Tiger (-116) over Phil (-102), but pass on the NFL player prop with Manning (-156) a bigger favorite to hit it closest against Brady (+132).
Which hole will the match be closed out (most likely by Woods and Manning)? FanDuel has odds of hole 18 or later (+130), hole 17 (+300), hole 16 (+340), hole 15 (+550), hole 14 (+900), hole 13 (2000), hole 12 (+5000), hole 11 or 10 (+10000).
I also expect Woods and Manning (-120) to be leading after 12 holes as offered at DraftKings Sportsbook. That's a more favorable bet for those not as interested in laying -225 on Woods and Manning to win the entire match. An even better bet is Woods and Manning (+135) to be leading after 6 holes at FanDuel Sportsbook.
Side bets and additional challenges could be added to the wagering as the match is extended. Keep that in mind as this is an entertainment event and the sponsors and networks certainly want the opportunity to raise as much money as possible, including from viewing fans, for COVID-19 relief efforts.
Thus, with that in mind, additional prop bets are available for entertainment purposes only at SportsBetting.com, a new legal and licensed sportsbook in the state of Colorado that will join the SuperBook and growing number of sports betting operators in taking bets in Colorado as major sports return to competitive action.

Last weekend live golf returned for the TaylorMade skins match for COVID-19 relief efforts. Nearly 2.35 million watched the match across many channels and devices, which is similar to a regular PGA Tour event. Rory McIlroy stole six skins worth $1.18 million on a sudden death Par 3 closest to the pin playoff. His wedge shot from 120 yards settled 13 feet from the pin to give his team with partner Dustin Johnson the skins match victory as favorites of -180 over Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff. The winning team raised $1.85 million for the American Nurses Foundation while the underdog team raised $1.15 million for the CDC Foundation.
Fowler led all players will seven birdies and the underdog team became a -190 favorite during in-game wagering through 12 holes. In-game betting, also called in-play, is another way to wager on games in progress as the sportsbooks adjust the lines and odds during a contest.
Last weekends golf skins match showed fans and bettors are hungry for familiar sports. The golf event joined UFC and NASCAR to provide bettors and bookmakers with their busiest weekend since the coronavirus crises stopped sports and sent the sports world to the sidelines in mid-March.
The momentum continues this weekend, and the Champions For Charity match will rise up and be an even bigger event with four of sports biggest stars leading the charge. The telecast and betting will add to a more interesting and entertaining broadcast with our generational athletes adding relief to fans and most importantly COVID-19 relief efforts.
