Online sports wagering launches across Indiana - WPTA

3rd October, 15:58

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - About one month after sports betting became legal in Indiana, bettors are now able to make online wagers.

The Indiana Gaming Commission says the first mobile sports wagering app is up and running. The first to become active is operated by Rush Street Interactive, which runs A second, by DraftKings Sportsbook, was expected to launch shortly.

Indiana residents who are at least 21 years of age can register and play online through a computer, Android or iOS device. To do so, one must first set up an account on the company's website.

"They can be watching a game and playing along live," said Paul Lieberman, the chief operating officer for DraftKings. "They can do it at a bar, they can do it at a restaurant."

Rush Street Interactive President Richard Schwartz said there is an opportunity to aim for a "wider target" of bettors by attracting customers from nearby areas such as Chicago, Cincinnati and Louisville, Kentucky.

But, he noted, "the vast majority of the marketing will be targeted to people within the state who are going to have access to begin playing with us as soon as they're interested," Schwartz said.

The apps that allow for online betting are designed to operate only when the user is within the state's borders.

In-person sports betting in Indiana started in early September. Locally, only the Winner's Circle in New Haven is licensed to take action.
