Paul Hornung places legal sports bet at Indiana Horseshoe Casino
12th September, 20:44Thursday marked the opening of a sports book in Elizabeth, Indiana, a move that came after the state legalized sports betting on Sept. 1.
At Horseshoe Casino in Southern Indiana, Louisville native and former Green Bay Packers star Paul Hornung was set to place the ceremonial first wager, which is somewhat amusing when you consider Hornung's history with gambling.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer, 83, was the first overall pick in the 1957 NFL Draft and won four NFL championships with the Packers as the team's halfback and kicker.
He also was suspended from the NFL for the entire 1963 season for gambling.
According to Pro Football Talk, part of Hornung's agreement with then-NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle to get reinstated was to avoid any contact with football betting and stop traveling to Las Vegas. He also was barred from attending the Kentucky Derby, something he had dome since childhood. He still lives in Louisville today. Elizabeth is across the Kentucky/Indiana border, just more than 20 miles from Louisville.
