William Hill punters are going to the dogs

William Hill has reported the first increase in betting on the dogs in at least a decade as punters switched back to sports after a government crackdown on fixed-odds betting terminals.The bookmaker said that cutting the maximum stake on the gaming machines from £100 to £2 last April had boosted over-the-counter betting in its shops "as customers substituted gaming activities with more sports betting".
While like-for-like net gaming revenues in its shops fell by 30 per cent owing to the crackdown, sport betting revenues grew by 8 per cent on the back of a 6 per cent increase in wagering -- "with material increases seen in greyhounds, other sports and virtual products".
